Geminids

gas lighters, photovoltaic panel, projected video

Geminids is a performance work with two parts, aimed at reimagining cosmic phenomena such as meteor showers as something that might be reproducible in miniature and indoors. Firstly, the energy from bursts of sparks produced by handheld gas lighters is realised as sound using a photovoltaic (or solar) panel (see top image). Then a tiny video camera is used to catch images of the bursts of sparks, which are then projected onto the solar panel, producing a very different account of the energies involved (bottom image).
